Iran and US are holding nuclear talks in Oman
TEHRAN - Iranian and U.S. negotiators are holding indirect talks in Muscat, Oman, on Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of American-led sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
The first round was held early on Friday, and the second was underway as well, Press TV reported. The Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the consultations focused on creating suitable conditions for the resumption of diplomatic and technical negotiations.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is leading the Iranian negotiating team. He is aided by his deputies Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Kazem Gharibabadi, and Hamid Qanbari, as well as Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei.
U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner lead the American team.
During his meeting with Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, Araghchi explained the viewpoints and proposals of the Islamic Republic regarding the subjects under negotiation, as well as Tehran’s demands and considerations.
The proposal was conveyed by Busaidi to Witkoff. According to reports, the American delegation has concluded its review of the proposal.
In the meeting with this Omani counterpart, Araghchi referred to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s approach of using diplomacy to secure national interests, underlining Tehran’s full readiness to defend the country’s sovereignty and national security against any excessive demands or adventurism.
He also expressed appreciation for Oman's hosting and facilitating the talks.
The Omani foreign minister, for his part, praised the Islamic Republic of Iran’s “good faith, sense of responsibility and seriousness” regarding diplomatic processes.
Pointing to the determination of regional countries to prevent any escalation of tensions, he voiced hope that this round of negotiations, conducted in good faith and with prudence by all sides, would pave the way for a “lasting” understanding between Iran and the United States.
